The modern automotive internal combustion engine has many many moving parts, and the distances between these parts are often very small indeed. Thus without preventive action, operation of the of the engine would soon cause these parts to wear necessitating their repair or replacement. The preventative action to reduce this wear is lubrication of these vital parts. The oil system exists for this very purpose indeed. Proper lubrication is essential for long engine life, and proper vehicle performance.

Functions of Motor Oils- Lubrication, Trap Particles, Clean & Cool Engine:
To provide for proper lubrication of engine parts, specially formulated oils are circulated under pressure. The oil reduces friction, and thus extends the life of engine parts and components. When combustion occurs within the engine, deposits are also formed. Modern automobile engine oils are designed to “trap “these deposits and hold onto them. When the oil is allowed to drain from the engine, these deposits go with it. Special additives found in quality premium oil products are designed to clean the engine, trap dirt and coat as well as to protect moving parts. In addition circulating motor engine oil plays a most vital part in cooling the engine, as essentially part of the auto cooling system, by carrying away waste heat which results from the friction between direct moving parts. And, along with the functions of lubricating and reducing friction, and cleaning the engine as well as aiding in the overall cooling processes there is a fourth function that motor engine oil provides – it forms a thin film on the cylinder walls forming a thin film on the cylinder walls themselves, thus helping the piston rings make a good seal against the engine cylinder walls.
Engine Oil Must Be Allowed to Circulate Freely in the Motor:
So that the oil can effectively perform its four functions, it must circulate properly within the engine. Bolted to under part of the engine block is a pan, the oil pan. At the bottom part of the pan is a reservoir for the oil, the sump, which is equipped with a drain plug for changing the oil. The function of the oil pump is to circulate the oil. Driven by gears from the camshaft and the crankshaft, the oil pump is most usually located in the sump. And finally to keep the oil as clean as possible, the oil filter is used. The oil filter is in an accessible spot on the outside of the engine, as it should be changed often and regularly.
Change Your Engine Oil & Filter Frequently & Regularly:
Hence as a result as a car and truck owner and driver you should take great care and attention to change your oil filter along with regular oil changes on a regular and planned basis whether by time, mileage or km.
